Contract electronics manufacturing, referred to as EMS (Electronic Manufacturing Services), involves much more than assembling components on a PCB. Depending on the scope of cooperation, an EMS partner may be responsible for preparing production documentation, purchasing components, SMT and THT assembly, testing, mechanical assembly, wiring, as well as manufacturing and delivering the complete device.
For an OEM manufacturer, system integrator, or company developing its own product, choosing the right EMS partner has a direct impact on quality, costs, delivery times, and the ability to scale production.
What does this process look like in practice? Below, we present the successive stages of cooperation with MERAWEX – from the initial project analysis through to the delivery of the finished device and support during subsequent stages of its lifecycle.
What is EMS and when is it worth using contract electronics manufacturing?
EMS is a service that involves the production of electronic devices or their components based on the customer’s documentation and requirements. The scope of cooperation may vary – from PCB assembly only to comprehensive production of a complete device.
In practice, a well-organized EMS process may include:
- documentation analysis and production preparation,
- design optimization for manufacturing (DFM – Design for Manufacturing),
- component purchasing and logistics,
- SMT and THT assembly,
- testing and quality control,
- mechanical assembly and wiring,
- final device assembly (Box-Build),
- packaging and logistics,
- technical and production support for subsequent production runs.
At MERAWEX, we tailor the scope of cooperation to the needs of each project. We can join the process at the stage of completed production documentation or support the customer as early as the design preparation stage.
1. Project analysis and production preparation
Each project starts with an analysis of the documentation and product requirements. The goal is not only to determine the production cost, but above all to check whether the design is ready for repeatable and stable production.
We analyze, among other things:
- PCB documentation and production files,
- BOM (Bill of Materials),
- SMT/THT assembly technology,
- component placement and types,
- testing requirements,
- mechanical design,
- quality and traceability requirements,
- applicable standards and industry requirements.
At this stage, it is possible to identify problems that would be much more costly to resolve at a later stage of production. These include incomplete documentation, inappropriate component selection, or design solutions that make automated assembly more difficult.
Manufacturing experience from the early stages of the project
At MERAWEX, project analysis is supported by our engineers and in-house design office. This allows us to look at the product not only from the perspective of PCB assembly, but as a complete device – its design, functionality, manufacturing, and subsequent operation.
This is an important difference between an EMS partner and a company whose activities are limited to electronics assembly.
For many years, MERAWEX has been designing and manufacturing its own electronic devices, including solutions for the power industry, telecommunications, industrial automation, and fire safety systems. We also apply the experience gained from developing these products to contract manufacturing.
2. Quotation and production preparation
After the project analysis, we prepare a quotation and define the production process assumptions.
The quotation is based primarily on the BOM and production documentation. Depending on the scope of cooperation, the offer may include components, PCBs, SMT/THT process preparation, assembly, testing, mechanical components, and final assembly.
At this stage, we also determine, among other things:
- production technology,
- production batch size and frequency,
- component sourcing method,
- scope of testing,
- quality requirements,
- packaging method,
- production and delivery schedule.
A well-prepared quotation should not be limited to the assembly cost. It should define the entire process required to achieve a repeatable product that meets the customer’s requirements.
3. DFM and documentation preparation
If the project requires additional optimization, MERAWEX engineers analyze it from a manufacturing perspective – DFM (Design for Manufacturing).
We check, among other things, solutions related to:
- solder pad geometry,
- component placement,
- fiducial marks,
- automated assembly capabilities,
- thermal profile of the soldering process,
- availability of test points,
- integration of the electronics with the enclosure and mechanical components.
A design that works correctly at the prototype stage is not always optimal for serial production. A design prepared with the manufacturing process in mind can reduce the number of manual operations, improve repeatability, and reduce the risk of errors.
Electronics and mechanics in one place
One of MERAWEX’s key capabilities is combining electronics manufacturing with our own mechanical production facilities.
Depending on the project, we can also manufacture enclosure and device structure components using, among other methods, CNC machining, laser cutting, and sheet metal processing.
This allows the electronics, mechanical components, and final assembly to be delivered as part of a single process.
4. Component purchasing and material preparation
After the production assumptions have been approved, material preparation begins.
MERAWEX can purchase components independently or work with materials supplied by the customer.
When components are purchased by MERAWEX, they are sourced through verified and authorized distribution channels. It is important not only to ensure component availability, but also to verify their origin and traceability, as well as the ability to ensure consistent supply for subsequent production runs.
Component inspection and traceability
Materials received into the warehouse are inspected and prepared for production in accordance with process requirements.
For small components, MERAWEX also uses an X-ray component counter. It enables the quantity of components in sealed reels to be determined quickly and accurately without the need for manual counting.
For customer-supplied materials, we use dedicated procedures for receiving, labeling, and recording them. This allows us to control material inventory levels and maintain traceability throughout the entire production process.
Traceability
Traceability is one of the fundamental elements of professional electronics manufacturing.
Information about materials, production batches, and the course of the process is recorded in production systems. This makes it possible to reconstruct the history of a specific production batch in the event of a complaint or problem analysis.
5. SMT line preparation
Before production begins, the SMT line is prepared according to the documentation for the specific project.
This includes, among other things:
- preparation of machine programs,
- configuration of component feeders,
- preparation of the SMT stencil,
- setting process parameters,
- configuration of optical inspection,
- preparation of the thermal profile for the reflow oven.
Precise process preparation has a direct impact on production repeatability. It is particularly important in serial production, where even a minor process error can be repeated across a large number of devices.
Two automated SMT lines
MERAWEX operates two independent, automated SMT lines. Their combined capacity exceeds 200,000 components per hour.
The two independent production lines increase production planning flexibility and allow different projects and production runs of varying sizes to be carried out in parallel.
6. SMT and THT assembly and electronics manufacturing
Once the process has been prepared, actual production begins.
In SMT technology, solder paste is applied to the PCB using a stencil. Pick-and-place machines then place the components on the board, which is subsequently transferred to the reflow oven.
Depending on the device design, we also use THT technology. Through-hole components can be assembled and soldered automatically or manually, depending on the project requirements.
The production process also includes operations related to electronics cleaning. MERAWEX uses an automatic PCB cleaning machine, PBT Works SuperSwash, which ensures repeatable removal of residues left after the soldering process.
Production takes place in a controlled ESD area, and assembly processes are carried out in accordance with the quality requirements specified for each project, including the requirements of IPC-A-610.
7. Final assembly
EMS does not have to end with a finished PCB.
For many projects, MERAWEX also carries out the final assembly of the device. This includes, among other things:
- installing the electronics in the enclosure,
- assembling mechanical components,
- wiring,
- installing subassemblies,
- assembling panels and structural components,
- performing final device tests.
Combining electronics manufacturing with mechanical capabilities makes it possible to produce the entire product in one location.
For the customer, this means fewer suppliers and fewer points requiring coordination. MERAWEX can take responsibility not only for manufacturing the PCB, but also for delivering a complete device in accordance with the documentation.
8. Testing and quality control
Quality control is carried out at various stages of the process, and its scope is tailored to the specific characteristics of the device.
In electronics manufacturing, MERAWEX uses, among other methods:
- automated 3D optical inspection (3D AOI),
- electrical testing,
- functional testing (FCT),
- device programming,
- final testing,
- laboratory and environmental testing.
Functional testing
Depending on the customer’s requirements, we can develop and perform functional tests of the device. These may include commissioning, programming, electrical parameter measurements, and verification of specific functions.
AOI 3D
Each SMT line is equipped with an automatic 3D optical inspection system. It checks the correct placement of components, the quality of solder joints, and the presence and correct positioning of components.
Automated inspection increases process repeatability and reduces the risk of errors.
In-house laboratory facilities
MERAWEX also has facilities for conducting environmental tests and testing, including an electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) test chamber and a climatic chamber.
This makes it possible to verify the device’s performance under specified conditions and identify potential problems at an early stage, before the product is submitted to an external laboratory or certification body.
9. Packaging and delivery of the finished product
After production is completed and the devices have successfully passed quality control, they are prepared for shipment.
The packaging method is selected according to the characteristics of the product. It takes into account, among other things, protection against mechanical damage, electrostatic discharge, and transport conditions.
Finished devices can be packaged individually or in bulk, labeled according to the customer’s requirements, and prepared for shipment according to the agreed schedule.
10. Support after production launch
Launching the first production run does not have to mark the end of the cooperation.
For subsequent production batches, MERAWEX can support the customer with:
- design changes,
- process optimization,
- component changes,
- complaint and RMA analysis,
- maintaining production documentation,
- cost optimization,
- preparation of subsequent production runs.
Maintaining production traceability is also an important element. Access to the history of materials and the production process makes it possible to analyze potential problems more quickly and make decisions regarding subsequent batches.
Why choose MERAWEX as an EMS partner?
Choosing an EMS partner is not only a decision about where the PCB will be assembled. It is a decision about who will be entrusted with part of the process responsible for production quality, delivery times, and repeatability.
